As always, the summer months are a busy period for golf! We have picked two occasions to tell you about:
Sussex County Oliver Trophy
Congratulations to Marc Taplin and the Scratch team for winning the Sussex County Plate Final on Saturday 17th August. Marc Taplin has provided us with a write up of the day:
“Having reached back to back Sussex County finals, we found ourselves facing Haywards Heath in the Plate Final at Ham Manor Golf Club.
For the morning foursomes we had the following pairings:
Thomas Thurloway & Harry Bayley
Sean Phillips & Alex Miller
Bradley Chrystie & Jon Short
Matthew Jarvis & Marc Taplin
It made a very pleasant change to be leading after the foursomes 3-1 rather than our usual 2-2 scoreline.
For the afternoon singles, local celebrity Harry Bayley set the pace, winning his match 6&4. Next out was Bradley Chrystie who played Haywards Heath top player, Bradley took him right down to the wire narrowly losing 1 down.
Next out was birthday boy Jon Short. Jon came up against a very inform player, unfortunately losing his match.
Out 4th was our No 1 player Thomas Thurloway, Thomas made very light work of his match 7&6 but I suppose it does help when you nearly drive your first hole at a mere 400 yards…Obviously!
Our number 5 was the ever-impressive Matt Jarvis, Matt was always in control and went on to win 2&1.
Yours truly was out 6th and also notched a 2&1 win.
Next was Sean Phillips, Sean was 1 up with 1 to play, knowing that we had already won in true sporting fashion Sean gave his opposition the half.
And last but by no means least was Alex Miller. Alex yet again delivering another point with a 2up victory.
So the final score was:
Chartham Park 8.5 – Haywards Heath 3.5
Mark Higgins was on holiday, he landed Saturday morning then no doubt broke all the speed limits to get to Littlehampton to support the team for the afternoon singles.
A special mention goes to Sam Bradley who attended every single match and added so much to the team, he took up every role possible and was instrumental in helping Chartham Park to another county victory. Thank you Sam.
Lastly, I would like to thank everyone that has represented the scratch team and helped us achieve our recent success.
Harry Bayley, Sam Bradley, Brad Chrystie, Mark Higgins, Ryan Hyder, Matt Jarvis, Steve Keast, Alex Miller, Andrew Payne, Sean Phillips, Jon Short, Joe Sullivan, Daniel Taplin, Thomas Thurloway and Jack Waymark.
This was my final game as the Scratch Team Captain and I’m so proud to be signing off with a WIN!”

SCLGA Presidents Team Trophy
Jenny Kirby, Muriel Devonshire and Brenda Marshall were selected to represent Chartham Park in the President’s Team Trophy, which was played at East Brighton on Monday 9th September.
This is an SCLGA competition and 44 Clubs took part. The Chartham Park Ladies battled through the showers and won with 82 points.
They have brought home a magnificent Rose Bowl Trophy, I hope we have room in the trophy cabinet for it!
Congratulations Jenny, Muriel and Brenda.
