News From The Health Club
So the story we have to focus on this month is that of James Cooper, Chartham Park’s Wellness Advisor and truly incredible man. If you would like to know what it’s like to ‘Climb Mount Everest’ on a stair climber in the gym, please read on:
World Mental Health Day takes place every year on 10th October. On this day (Thursday 10th October 2019) I challenged myself to climb the equivalent of Mount Everest (8,848 m / 29,029 ft) on the stair climber at Chartham Park.
The Smilinggg Everest Challenge began at 8am and took 8 hours and 56 minutes to complete. I climbed a total of 2,528 floors non-stop and had my Dad at my side for the last few. The view from the top was breathtaking!
So why did I attempt this challenge?
First and most importantly, it was to raise as much money as possible for Samaritans to carry out their vision and mission:
Samaritans Vision is that fewer people die by suicide. They work to achieve this vision by making it their mission to alleviate emotional distress and reduce the incidence of suicide feelings and suicidal behaviour.
Someone contacts Samaritans every 6 seconds and in the next hour Samaritans will receive over 600 calls from people struggling to cope.
By donating to Samaritans, your money helps save lives. It enables Samaritans to be available 24 hours a day to provide emotional support for people who are struggling to cope, including those who have had thoughts of suicide.
Secondly, it was to raise awareness of Smilinggg and The Smilinggg Mile.
To support this challenge and Samaritans Charity:
Donations can be accepted until the end of October.
As the generous donations continue to roll in, and having added the £135 raised at Chartham Park Golf and Country Club on the day to the fund raising kitty, I’m beyond
delighted to announce that we are currently at 114% of our fund raising target. Thanks to each and every one of you, we have raised £3,313 (Total plus Gift Aid: £3,844.63).
Thank you for joining me on The Road to Smilinggg Everest. Until the next challenge… Keep Smilingg
