Your Golf Club Update - August

Thursday 25th August 2022

I hope you’re enjoying your summer and making the most of the beautiful sunshine.

August has so far continued to bring a lot of hot, dry weather, and has the greenkeeping team crossing fingers for a few rainy days! It’s been a busy summer season so far, with plenty of golf competitions and gym challenges. I hope you enjoy reading our latest news in this month’s newsletter. In the meantime, stay cool and don’t forget the sunscreen out on the course!

Course Report

The prolonged spell of dry weather is starting to cause some issues for the upkeep of the course. Our legal levels of usable water are running low, which means we have to stop watering tees & approaches for the time being and concentrate on greens. We will hose some of the turf surfaces until rainfall levels increase. Grass is a very sturdy plant and will recover in time, and we will over-seed any necessary areas.

The greens are being cut every other day at a height of 4.5mm and regular feeds are being applied to keep the sward healthy. Solid tining the greens regularly is also helping the water get to the root of the plant where it is needed the most.

Due to the weather we have decided to postpone our renovation work this year and a new date of the week commencing 26th September has been added to the diary. Tees and approaches will be left for longer to try and help the sward to compete with the dry weather. We will take this opportunity to bring forward the cutting back of the long rough areas, which will give us more time to concentrate on re-establishing the course when the weather breaks. Areas around the 2nd, 15th, & 16th tees have also been cleared to improve the visual aspect of the course. Please help by repairing your pitch marks and raking your footprints in the bunkers.

Men's Club Championship Results

A fantastic two days of golf was played in the Men’s Club Championship on 23rd and 24th July. A field of 99 players started on Saturday, with the cut made to top 24 gross and top 24 net scores playing the following day.

Harry Bayley, Ashley Head and Jamie Allen led the Gross with -1 score of 71 to lead from Tyler Springthorpe and Charlie Curtis on +1 73. Jamie Allen was the leader of the net scores with a net 61 -11 after his Gross 71.

A slightly windier Sunday made course play a little tricky, with scores reflecting this. Harry Bayley played excellent golf in shooting a -3 gross 69 to win the Club Championship by 7 shots, with a total of 140 -4 from Charlie Curtis on 147 +3.

Jamie Allen played solid golf on the Sunday to shoot a net 72 to add to his 61 giving a total of 133 (-11) to win by 5 shots from Ashley Head with a net 138 (-6). Please visit the website for the full results.

Particular praise was made to the Head Greenkeeper Paul Meek for getting the course in such great condition.

Ladies’ Club Championship

The Ladies’ section held their Club Championship over the weekend of 30th and 31st July. The first day saw sunny skies and warm temperatures with some very good scores. Jenny Farrington shot an excellent gross 83 to be leading both the gross and net scores (net 67, -5).

Like the men's competition last weekend, the Sunday was a little breezier and we even saw some rain, so scores were not quite as good as the first day. Despite this, Jenny Farrington shot a gross 87 to add to her 83 for a total of 170 and won the Ladies Club Championship gross by four shots from Tricia Edwards (86 +88 - 172).

Nicole Collingwood won the net prize with a total of 136 with two excellent scores of net 69 to win on countback from Jenny Farrington.

Teresa Vaughan won the Summer Salver that was played alongside the Ladies Club Championship, winning with an excellent score of Net 67. Please see the website for more details.
